A Conservative Approach to Dentistry
The best tooth is one that has no restorations or repairs. Dentistry is a great service and, at the same time, is second to a naturally healthy tooth.
Each time a filling is replaced it usually becomes larger, eventually needing a crown (cap) and possibly a root canal. Even if this eventually happens, there is no need to rush the process.
Some dentists will recommend placing a crown on a tooth with a small or medium sized filling even though no decay is present in order to avoid future problems. This might seem valid except the crown can usually be done later when / if decay shows up. An exception might be a tooth with a very large filling that would be more difficult to restore if it fractured before it was replaced with a crown.
Another example would be a tooth with very deep decay that might not be visibly into the nerve of the tooth and a root canal would be best before the placement of a crown to prevent the need to remove and replace the crown after a root canal is completed.
We prefer a more conservative diagnosis and treatment plan. My goal is to balance potential problems, solutions, and patient desires when arriving at a treatment plan.
There is room for different opinions when you talk to more than one dentist. Not too long ago Reader’s Digest published a study done with a patient visiting 50 different dental offices. The treatment options ranged from $500 to almost $30,000. I think it’s fair to say both extremes, especially the high end, should be dismissed. The biggest problem in the treatment plans is that, in most cases, only one option was presented to the patient.
